Roof collapse accident raises renewed calls for increased safety measures in underground coal mines

The roof collapse accident on Saturday evening at the GDK 2 cable-stayed coal mine in RG-I area of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) in Peddapalli district, in which three coal miners were injured, triggered renewed calls for stronger safety measures in the state-owned coal mining company’s underground coal mines.

Three coal miners – T. Sampath, R. Shankar and Noyal Raj – were injured in the freak accident. According to sources, they were admitted to Singareni District Hospital, Ramagundam, in Godavarikhani on Saturday evening. One of them was shifted to a specialty hospital in Hyderabad on Sunday morning for better medical treatment. Her condition is said to be stable.

In May this year, a dump truck driver was killed in an unusual accident at the GDK 11 coal mine in the RG-I region. Last year, a contract worker was killed in another accident at the GDK 11 underground coal mine.

Meanwhile, Telangana Boggu Gani Karmika Sangham (TBGKS) Chairman M. Ramamurthy visited the injured coal miners at the coal town’s Singareni Hospital on Sunday. Later, speaking to the media in the coal town, Mr. Ramamurthy said that Saturday’s mine accident in RG-I area has exposed the lack of implementation of prescribed safety norms in coal mines. He said the decisions of the tripartite safety meeting must be implemented in letter and spirit to prevent accidents in coal mines.
