Milwaukee police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash between a car and a motorcycle that occurred Saturday night near 1st and Walker streets. Saturday night was the third night of the Harley-Davidson Homecoming, an event that draws thousands of motorcyclists to Milwaukee for the weekend. The crash happened around 6:40 p.m. Saturday. Several witnesses at the scene said they observed a silver Hyundai speeding down Walker Street when it struck a man on a motorcycle at the intersection with 1st Street. Then, the witnesses said, the Hyundai stopped at the intersection of Walker and Barclay Streets. Two people, who the witnesses said appeared to be teenagers, got out of the Hyundai and ran east toward the Kinnickinnic River. “All of a sudden the car slammed on the brakes and two guys jumped out. They jumped over the brick wall across the street and almost ran me over,” said one witness who wished to remain anonymous. A witness said she saw a passerby perform CPR on the motorcyclist. The 31-year-old motorcyclist died at the hospital, according to Milwaukee police. “A passerby performed CPR for what seemed like five minutes,” the woman said. “And then the paramedics arrived.” Minutes before the crash, Milwaukee police officers were stopped nearby at the corner of 3rd and Virginia streets after someone said their car had been broken into.
