Sonya Massey’s son recalls the horrific moment he was told “someone” had killed his mother after she was shot by a police officer.

The Black mother of two from Springfield, Illinois, was shot and killed by 36-year-old sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson, a white man. The officer had responded to the mother’s call to investigate a burglar seen in the area outside her home on July 6. After the release of bodycam footage revealing the horrifying details of her death, her family is now trying to raise public awareness about the shooting. A leaked tape also records an officer telling a dispatcher that Massey’s injuries were “self-inflicted.”

Sonya’s 17-year-old son, Malachi Hill, recounted the heartbreaking phone call in which he was told his mother had been killed – with no one willing to tell him by whom. Malachi said:Basically, I take my dad to work at 5 a.m. or something, so I took him to work. I came home. Then I went back to bed. As soon as I was about to go back to sleep, I got a call. It was like a random number. I didn’t know who it was, but I answered. And that’s when they said, “Your mother was shot, and it came out of her neck – I mean, it went through her eye and it came out of her neck.”

They just said “someone.” That’s all. I don’t know why they kept saying “someone” shot them. And I said, “Who?” And they just made me say who. I was like, “Who?” And they just said, “Someone.” And then the next thing you know, I got up. I wasn’t even thinking. I was just like, “I have to go to my grandmother’s house…”

“I told my grandma what happened and she couldn’t believe it any more than I could. I just didn’t want to believe it. And then we only found out a day later that it was a policeman. That’s the problem. So, to be honest, we were completely at a loss.”

When asked what he thinks should happen to Sean Grayson, Malachi said, “I think, honestly, man, he needs to live or something, because there’s no way that should have happened to my mother.

He shouldn’t have done that. That shouldn’t have happened. That can’t happen. I feel like he didn’t care from the beginning. He didn’t care from the beginning because I watched a clip of the first part of it and he just had no consideration for my mother, so you don’t have to have any consideration for him. You keep him under wraps for as long as you can. I don’t even know.”

Malachi gave a heartfelt interview to CBS News about his mother, saying she was “a good mother” – “She was very smart and always helped everyone but herself. Honestly, just a bundle of love to me. She cooked me the best meals. I love her food, honestly,” he said.

“She’s just the most loving person there is. I don’t know. That’s the person that made me feel so loved.” Malachi told assembled reporters that he didn’t have the heart to watch the horrific bodycam video during a news conference where the family aired their grievances about the shooting on Tuesday.
