LA County Superior Court closed Monday due to ransomware incident

Due to ongoing efforts to restore and restart network systems severely hit by a ransomware attack discovered on Friday morning, July 19, the Los Angeles County Superior Court is expected to remain closed on Monday, July 22.

All 36 courthouses in Los Angeles County will be closed Monday, but authorities expect them to reopen on Tuesday.

“The Court was the victim of an unprecedented cyberattack on Friday that resulted in the shutdown of nearly all network systems to contain the damage, protect the integrity and confidentiality of information, and ensure future network stability and security,” said Chief Judge Samantha P. Jessner. “While the Court continues to move rapidly toward a recovery and restoration phase, many critical systems were still offline Sunday evening. An additional day will allow the Court’s team of experts to focus exclusively on bringing our systems back online so the Court can resume operations as quickly, smoothly, and securely as possible.”

Over the last 72 hours, staff have worked tirelessly, working with external consultants, suppliers, other courts and the police, to restore access to the court’s network systems. From the court’s website and external My Jury Duty portal to its internal case management systems, these systems cover the entire operation of the court.

The team of experts has already achieved a lot, but there are still obstacles that are slowing them down. As of Sunday night, many of the court’s network systems were still down. To give important networks another day to come back online, the court will be closed on Monday.

Judges and court staff must be able to work in a safe environment with the information necessary to carry out the Court’s mission, although the Court is mindful of the impact a court closure will have on the communities it serves and its mission. The Court is confident that as progress continues and obstacles are removed, the closure will not last longer than one day.
