Two young girls are among the six people killed in a horror accident that the local MP described as “devastating”.

The children died when a car collided with a motorbike on the A61 between Staincross, Barnsley and Newmillerdam, Wakefield, on Sunday afternoon.

The two girls, a woman and a man, all of whom were travelling in the Ford Focus, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on a country road near a golf course – as were the motorcyclist and his pillion passenger, a man and a woman.

West Yorkshire Police described the incident as “absolutely tragic” and said emergency services rushed to the scene near the village of Mapplewell after being notified of the accident at 3.54pm.

Pictures from the scene of the accident show a burned-out, blackened and demolished car on a grass verge. Debris can be seen scattered across the road near the destroyed vehicle.

The road has been closed between Shaw Lane and Warren Lane and is expected to remain closed for some time while police investigate.

The local MP described the tragedy as “devastating” as he expressed his condolences on Sunday evening.

Safety Minister Dan Jarvis, MP for Barnsley North, said on X: “Devastating news. My deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of those who have tragically lost their lives.”
