Waterford Heritage Days honors firefighter shot and killed in Butler County last weekend

Just over a week ago, Corey Comperatore was shot and killed at a Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, following an assassination attempt on the former president.

People across the country remembered him, including at an event in Waterford on Sunday.

On the final day of Waterford Heritage Days, State Rep. Jake Banta and former Erie City Councilman Brian Shank addressed the public at a memorial service for the deceased firefighter.

The ceremony ended with a prayer in memory of Comperatore and how he died protecting his family.

“This whole scenario is based on hate, and we are better than that. It’s like I said, it’s not a red thing, it’s not a blue thing, it’s a red, white and blue thing. I remember how we felt as Americans after 9/11 and 9/12. We all came together, and we need to do that again,” said Brian Shank, former Erie County Councilman.

Shank said the memorial was an opportunity to remember Comperatore’s victims and to unite as Americans against political violence.
