The war in Gaza, triggered by The Hamas attack of October 7 in southern Israel has killed more than 38,900 Palestinians, according to the territory’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its count. The war has caused a humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza coastal strip, displacing most of its 2.3 million residents and causing widespread hunger.

The Hamas attack in October killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and the militants took about 250 hostages. About 120 people are still in captivity, and about a third of them are believed to be dead, according to Israeli authorities.

In the occupied West Bank, a 20-year-old man was shot dead by Israeli forces late Friday night, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. The Israeli army commented on the shooting, saying its forces opened fire on a group of Palestinians who were throwing stones at Israeli troops in the town of Beit Ummar.

An eyewitness said Ibrahim Zaqeq was not directly involved in the clashes and was staying nearby.

Zaqeq “just looked at them, they shot him in the head. I picked him up from here and took him to the clinic,” Thare Abu Hashem said.

On Saturday, Hamas identified Zaqeq as one of its members. At the funeral, his body was wrapped in the militant group’s green flag.

Since the Gaza war began, violence in the area has increased. According to the Health Ministry in Ramallah, which records the number of Palestinian deaths, at least 577 Palestinians in the West Bank have been killed by Israeli fire since then.

In Cairo, International Mediatorsincluding the United States, continue to push for a phased agreement between Israel and Hamas that would end the fighting and release about 120 hostages in the Gaza Strip.
On Friday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said: armistice He said negotiations on the deal between Hamas and Israel to release Israeli hostages held by the terrorist group in Gaza were “within the ten-meter line,” but added: “We know that everything is most difficult in the last ten meters.”

Since the week-long ceasefire in November, negotiations between the warring sides have been inconclusive and halting, with Hamas and Israel repeatedly accusing each other of hindering efforts to reach an agreement.
