Mumbai Water Cut: BMC will cut water supply to these areas tomorrow

Amid an alarming decline in water levels across Maharashtra, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced an eight-hour water shutdown for several areas of A Ward on Saturday, May 11.

According to the BMC updates, repair work on a 1200 mm diameter water canal on Jeevan Bima Road will be carried out between 3:30 pm and 11:30 pm, which will result in complete disruption of water supply in areas like Colaba, Koliwada and Navi Nagar. Earlier, water leakage was reported from the canal due to ongoing work on Metro 3 project near Mantralaya building.

“The 1200mm diameter water pipe used from the Cross Maidan Tunnel to supply water to the BMC’s A district has been subjected to inspection following reports of low pressure and reduced supply volumes. It was found that the water channel had started leaking near Mantralaya building on Jeevan Bima Road during construction work on Metro 3. The BMC’s emergency repair department immediately assessed the situation. Immediate repair of the leak is required to prevent water wastage and possible street flooding. “The repair work is expected to take approximately 7 to 8 hours,” the city administration said in a statement Midday.

The BMC has also worked with the Marine Drive Traffic Police to obtain necessary permissions to minimize traffic disruption. While the excavation begins at 9:00 a.m., the actual repair work begins at 3:30 p.m. During the eight hours, regular water supply to Colaba, additional special water supply to Koliwada and special water supply to Marine Area will remain completely disrupted. For this reason, residents have been asked to store enough water.

Earlier this month, another water cut was announced for parts of Kandivali and Borivali. Due to pipeline replacement between Mithi Chowky junction and Mahavir Nagar junction, which was expected to take 24 hours, the BMC suspended water supply on May 2 and 3.

The water level in lakes is falling

The water cut comes at a time when the water level in seven lakes across the state has dropped significantly to 16.48 per cent. While appealing to citizens to use water carefully, the BMC government also said that the water supply will last until July 31. However, the water level still remains at a new low considering that it was at 22.25 percent in 2023 and 25.80 percent in 2022.
