CT driver arrested after leading police on a chase through Massachusetts

SOUTHBRIDGE, Massachusetts (WWLP) – A Connecticut man was arrested in Southbridge after hitting several patrol cars during a police chase.

According to Charlton police, a man driving a stolen vehicle was allegedly involved in an incident in Connecticut in which a patrol car and a civilian vehicle were intentionally struck. The vehicle, a blue sedan with significant damage, was traveling westbound on Route 20 in eastern Hampden County and southwestern Worcester County.


Officers in Holland saw the suspect vehicle traveling in the area of ​​164 Mashapaug Road and attempted to make a traffic stop. The driver continued onto Sturbridge Road and Leno Road before crossing into Sturbridge.

On Thursday at approximately 2:30 p.m., Massachusetts State Police notified Charlton officers of numerous unsuccessful attempts and that the driver may have been in possession of a firearm. Charlton Police saw the vehicle traveling east on Route 20, and upon seeing them, the driver crossed the double solid lines on Route 20 (Sturbridge Road) that delineate east-west traffic and continued along the Route 20 corridor and adjacent crossing roads.

Police pursued the vehicle to stop it, but the vehicle turned into a patrol car and drove off. The vehicle came to a stop on Torrey Road in Sturbridge and the driver, a 31-year-old Nicholas Newton from Connecticut, was arrested by police in Charlton.

Newton was a drug dealer and had warrants out for his arrest in both Connecticut and Florida. He was hospitalized and is facing the following charges:

  • Failure to stop for the police
  • Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
  • On the run from justice
  • Receiving stolen goods +$1200
  • Willful damage to property +$1200
  • Possession of a Class A substance

Additional charges are pending; Holland Police will charge Newton with several civil and criminal charges, including failure to stop for police.
