Agra: A 25-year-old Dalit groom and several ‘baraatis’ were allegedly attacked with rods and sticks and hurled caste-related abuses by a group of upper-caste men during a wedding procession in a village in Khatauli area of ​​Muzaffarnagar district on Monday. The groom, Amrit Kumar, was forced to dismount from a horse and humiliated, his family said. Police charged some of the attackers with ‘sedition’ under sections of the new Penal Code. Kumar said his family and other guests – part of the ‘baraatis’ – were dancing to the DJ’s music when suddenly some people turned up and asked the wedding organisers to stop playing the songs. Kumar added, ‘When the ‘baraatis’ refused their demand, they were attacked. Some ‘baraatis’, including my brother Ajay Kumar, were injured and we filed a complaint with the police.” Ramashish Yadav, DSP, Khatauli, said, “The incident took place in Madhkarimpur when the ‘baraat’ was passing through the village. Some men from another caste objected to a song played by the DJ.” He added, “A heated argument broke out which led to a scuffle in which three people were injured.” “Following a complaint from the groom’s relatives, a case under BNS sections 190 (provocation with intent to cause riot) and 191 (2) (whoever is guilty of riot) and SC/SC Act has been registered against eight named and 10 unidentified persons and further investigation is on,” said Umesh Kumar, SHO of Khatauli. He added, “Raids were conducted at various places to nab the accused.” Ravindra Kumar, who filed the complaint, said, “Some upper caste men angrily asked, ‘Who gave you the right to sit on the horse?’. They also used caste-related slurs against us. When we protested against their behaviour, some started attacking us… There were women and children in the procession and we all were completely shocked and scared.”
