Man killed outside Wise High School identified

Thousands of people attended a vigil outside the school on Friday evening to remember three former students who died in a car accident on July 6.

UPPER MARLBORO, Maryland — Prince George’s County police are trying to determine who shot two people, killing one, outside Wise High School Friday night. The shooting occurred after the conclusion of a candlelight vigil honoring three former students killed in a car crash.

Vikings freshman Khyree Jackson and two of his former high school teammates – Isaiah Hazel and Anthony “AJ” Lytton Jr. – were killed in a traffic accident on July 6 when a speeding driver plowed into them.

Thousands attended the vigil, a night meant to heal. But as the crowd dispersed and police left around 10 p.m., a fire broke out outside the school.

A man and a woman were shot and taken to a nearby hospital. The woman is expected to survive, while the man succumbed to his injuries.

Police identified the man Saturday as 24-year-old Shahid Omar Jr. of Upper Marlboro. WUSA9 spoke to Omar’s cousin Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of Wise High School. He said Omar has a young daughter and is expecting another child.

According to Prince George’s County police, officers were patrolling the Wise High School parking lot when they pulled over 30 seconds before the shooting and heard the gunshots.

“In fact, they were the ones who made the first call to our dispatch. Then everyone started responding. No citizen called 911, our officer initiated the call,” said Captain Sukhjit Batth, the deputy commander of the Major Crimes Division. “They quickly turned around, returned to the scene and were stopped by citizens who were actually performing life-saving measures on an adult female victim.”

Police have not yet released any information about the shooters, but officials have confirmed that a weapon was found in the area. There is no information yet about the motive or the events leading up to the shooting.

WUSA9 reporter Alexis Wainwright was at the school to attend the vigil. Police have not linked the vigil to the shooting.
