Investigation of a huge sinkhole in Alton, Illinois continues

A park in Alton, Illinois, remains closed with no timetable for reopening, more than ten days after a massive sinkhole appeared in the middle of a soccer field.

The images taken by the 618 Drone Service on July 6 show the extent of the sinkhole.

The sinkhole, which formed in Gordon Moore Park on June 26, was caused by the collapse of a mine, park officials said.

No one was on the field at the time of the collapse, Alton Mayor David Goins told local media.

The park remained closed and mining operations were suspended pending an investigation into the cause by the Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA), city officials said in a statement on July 5.
