San Diego police officer shoots man in La Jolla – NBC 7 San Diego

A San Diego police officer shot and killed a man who approached officers with a knife in the Bird Rock neighborhood of La Jolla, closing the streets for several hours following the altercation on Saturday morning.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, San Diego Police received multiple calls around 7 a.m. reporting that a man armed with a knife was causing a disturbance on the street in the area of ​​5400 La Jolla Boulevard.

When officers arrived, they found a man in his 20s standing next to a vehicle that had stopped in the street. Officers approached the man, who came at them with the knife. Officers drew their weapons and ordered the man to drop his knife, the department said.

According to the police department, an officer shot the man. Officers immediately provided medical aid and paramedics took him to a hospital, where he later died. No officers were injured.

The officer who fired the fatal shot has been employed by the SDPD for three years and is currently assigned to the SDPD’s Northern Division.

The intersection of La Jolla Boulevard and Midway Street was closed in all directions for several hours after the incident due to the investigation, the SDPD wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). The streets were reopened around 3:30 p.m.

Pursuant to the statewide Memorandum of Understanding (which prescribes the protocol for investigating shootings involving police officers and deputies), the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit was called to the scene to investigate the shooting.

At this early stage of the investigation, the motive and circumstances of the shooting are still being investigated, the department said.

After the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit completes its investigation, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office will review it and determine whether the officers can be held criminally responsible for their actions.
