CAL FIRE suspends all fire permits in two California counties

CAL FIRE announced that all fire permits in San Benito County and Monterey County will be suspended. The announcement was made Thursday due to the “extreme threat of destruction of life, improved property or natural resources by fire due to critical fire weather and acute vegetation dryness and/or due to heavy deployment of firefighting forces to suppress fires.” Burning is prohibited on all federally recognized lands in San Benito and Monterey counties. “Campfires at organized campgrounds or on private property that are otherwise permitted are permitted if the campfire is maintained in a manner that prevents its spread into the wilderness,” said George Nunez, Unit Chief of CALF FIRE San Benito Monterey. The order will take effect July 4, 2024, until CAL FIRE officially lifts the proclamation. State rangers and other authorized representatives of the Director of Forestry and Fire Protection can issue restricted temporary fire permits only when burning or using open fire is necessary for public health, safety or welfare.
