“It’s amazing to be selected in front of my family,” Helenius said.

Helenius, a proud Finnish native, has traveled the world from his homeland to Las Vegas and then back to Buffalo, home of the Sabres.

His journey has not gone unnoticed, as he recently caught the attention of the city’s scouts.

Buffalo’s training camp was a valuable experience for Helenius, giving him a glimpse of what to expect from the city and the team.

“We were there for the harvest, so I know the place a little.”

The 18-year-old pivot is spending his first two days at Buffalo’s development camp savoring the moment and making a strong case to the Sabres coaching staff.

“It’s fun because I’ve seen a lot of good prospects and good players, so yeah, it’s pretty fun.”
