Former 49ers safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. suspended for six games for performance-enhancing drugs

Out-of-contract safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. was suspended six games by the NFL on Tuesday for violating its policy on performance-enhancing substances, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Gipson, 33, spent the last two seasons with the 49ers and became the team’s starting free safety at the start of the 2022 season.

The Wyoming product was something of an Iron Man in his two seasons in the Bay Area, starting 34 of 35 regular-season games and all six of the 49ers’ playoff games.

In 2023, Gipson recorded one interception and one sack in 16 games.

Before coming to San Francisco, Gipson spent four years with the Browns, three with the Jaguars, one with the Texans and two with the Bears after being an undrafted free agent in 2012.

In 2014, Gibson made his only career Pro Bowl appearance with the Browns.

Gipson is still eligible to sign a contract with a team and participate in training camp and preseason training, although the six-game suspension would take effect beginning in the first week.

He is not the only former 49er who will miss the season due to a PED violation.

Jimmy Garoppolo was suspended for two games in February for violating league rules.

After signing a one-year contract with the Rams, Garoppolo claimed the positive test was due to a mistake he made when applying for a medical use exemption for an unspecified substance.
