Two arrested after standoff in Sheldon | News

SHELDON – Two men were arrested at gunpoint after a more than 20-minute standoff on Tuesday afternoon, May 8, in Sheldon.

The arrests of 42-year-old Michael Patrick Monaghan and 64-year-old Douglas Paul Kooistra stemmed from an officer recognizing Monaghan standing in the front door of the home at 511 Sixth Ave. at 1 p.m. knelt, knowing he was wanted “Search warrant out of Brien County, according to Sheldon police.

Monaghan locked himself in the one-story house, owned by Kooistra and located east of Sheldon City Park.

Police knocked and announced over a loudspeaker for over 20 minutes that police had a warrant for Monaghan’s arrest.

Police also gave Monaghan several commands over the loudspeaker to come outside.

The orders were ignored.

Monaghan’s probation officer, an O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office deputy, also called and texted Monaghan, and Monaghan stated he was in Sibley.

The police eventually forced entry into the apartment.

Kooistra emerged from a bedroom and told officers he did not know Monaghan.

The officers shouted something to Monaghan, but he did not respond.

He was found in the bathroom next to the bedroom from which Kooistra had come.

Monaghan hid in a bathtub behind a shower curtain.

He then ignored requests to turn around and put his hands behind his back and had to be physically grabbed and handcuffed, according to the incident report.

Monaghan was also accused of interfering in official acts. He was also charged with two counts of probation violations after he was transported to the county jail in Primghar and a urine sample tested positive for amphetamines, methamphetamine and ecstasy.







Duane Kooistra arrested

Douglas Kooistra is accompanied by Sheldon Police Officer Dan Crawley after he was arrested on Tuesday for interference with official acts after a wanted person was found at his home in Sheldon.



Kooistra was also arrested on a charge of interfering with official acts – hindering prosecution.

Monaghan was wanted for fifth-degree larceny stemming from an incident at 1:55 a.m. Friday, April 5, at the Kwik Star in Sheldon.

Security video shows Monaghan giving a Dr. Pepper grabs out of the drink cooler and hides it with his left arm.

He then entered with Dr. Pepper the men’s room.

Monaghan is then seen leaving the toilet without a soda in his hand and walking to a table in the supermarket.

He is then seen walking through the hallways and returning to the table with his jacket pocket full of items.

Monaghan then left the store with the items.

Kwik Star employees said Monaghan did not pay for the soda and other items he hid.

Employees were unable to provide a list of items taken, but estimated they had a total value of less than $300.

A warrant for Monaghan’s arrest was issued on April 21.

Fifth-degree theft charges involve incidents in which the value of the stolen property is estimated to be less than $300.

Both men have had numerous run-ins with law enforcement.

Monaghan’s probation violation charge was related to his first-offense convictions for possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine – on Dec. 21 and driving while suspended on March 19 in O’Brien County District Court in Primghar.

Kooistra was convicted last year of five counts of fifth-degree criminal coercion, two counts of first-degree trespassing and one count of interfering with official acts.
