Man charged in connection with shooting in Greenbrier, Tennessee

GREENBRIER, Tenn. (WKRN) – Authorities are trying to track down a man after a Greenbrier police officer was involved in a shooting Friday night.

At the request of 19th Judicial District Attorney General Robert Nash, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) announced that its special agents were investigating the Friday, June 28, incident, which preliminary information indicates occurred following a traffic stop in the 100 block of Candy Lane.

A Greenbrier police officer stopped a Nissan Maxima, but the driver allegedly fled and attempted to strike the officer after a female passenger exited the vehicle. The officer fired shots at the car, but at the time of this writing, it is unclear if the shots struck the car or the driver, as the search for both is still ongoing, officials said.

The TBI has asked for the public’s help in locating 22-year-old Jalon Devon Smith, who is facing charges in connection with Friday’s shooting.

At the time of the incident, authorities said Smith was driving a blue 2009 Nissan Maxima with Tennessee license plate 550-BMRL.

“TBI agents are working to independently determine the sequence of events that led to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be submitted to the Attorney General for further review and consideration,” the office said in a statement on Saturday, June 29. “The TBI acts solely as a fact-finder in its cases and does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified in such cases. That determination rests with the Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.”

No further details have been released about this incident, including the identity of the officer involved.
