Omissions and errors occur in the investigation of the Hydra fire

Errors and omissions have come to light in the case of Friday evening’s devastating forest fire on the Saronic island of Hydra, which was sparked by fireworks fired from a yacht privately chartered by 10 Kazakh citizens, including reportedly oligarchs.

The greatest responsibility seems to lie with the fire department.

A senior officer of the corps, assisted by his subordinate, ensured that the yacht’s smoke generators had not been used. He then questioned the Kazakh nationals, who denied any involvement in the incident and were subsequently allowed to leave the country without being questioned as witnesses.

Greek police, for their part, denied reports that they had allowed the defendants to leave the country and said they had never been instructed to prevent them from leaving the country.

In a statement on Tuesday, it said the police had not been involved in the preliminary investigations, nor had they been informed of any travel bans imposed by the investigating or prosecutorial authorities.

The 13 Greek crew members of the yacht, who are accused of a serious crime, are due to testify on Wednesday.
