One person died in severe weather in Gaston County on Wednesday

One person died Wednesday as storms ripped through southwest North Carolina.

According to Gaston County Emergency Management and Fire Services, first responders responded to multiple calls and a tree fell on a car. New Hope Fire Department managed to get one person out of the car, but one person died.

Gaston County EMS said it responded to a total of over 1,200 service-related calls related to the weather.

Severe weather struck much of southern North Carolina Wednesday afternoon, with some residents reporting hail the size of a neighborhood in Bessemer City.
