Jogger in intensive care after wolf attack in French zoo

A 36-year-old woman is currently in intensive care after she was attacked by wolves while jogging in Thoiry, a zoo about 40 kilometers west of Paris, the BBC reported.

The incident occurred early Sunday when the victim, who was staying at a lodge in the park, accidentally entered the main safari zone, which is reserved exclusively for vehicles.

The woman was attacked by three polar wolves and suffered severe bites on her neck, back and leg. Thoiry is a popular wildlife park in France where around 800 animals are allowed to roam freely while visitors can observe them from the safety of their vehicles.

The park offers accommodation near the wolf and bear enclosures, with the lodge area secured by electric fences and ditches, news site France Info reported.

It is still unclear why the woman ventured into the car-free safari zone. The park authorities have not yet made an official statement on the incident. “We do not know at this point whether the guest made a mistake or whether there was a problem with the signposts,” an anonymous police source told the newspaper Le Parisien.

The woman was rescued after park rangers heard her screams during the attack and was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The incident is currently under investigation.
