Lagos LGA suspends school feeding vendors over cholera outbreak

Agege LGA in Lagos has suspended food sales in its schools as part of its measures to contain the spread of cholera in the state.

On June 11, Lagos Health Commissioner Akin Abayomi said five people had died while about 60 residents were hospitalized due to a suspected cholera outbreak in some parts of the city.

On 15 June, the Commissioner confirmed The cholera outbreak was commented on by stating that there were 350 suspected cases, of which 17 were confirmed, and there were 15 deaths.

Since Thursday, the number of cholera cases Deaths in the state increased to 24.

NAN reported that Agege LGA Chairman Ganiyu Egunjobi said the council had embarked on a rigorous sensitisation campaign to prevent the spread of the disease.

Egunjobi pointed out that market participants and schools had also been sensitized through radio on precautionary measures to prevent the disease in the community.

“We have banned all school meal vendors from working to ensure the safety of pupils and students,” he said.

“We informed both the pupils and the students through the radio stations that they should bring food to protect themselves from the cholera disease.

“This development will enable us to detect and prevent outbreaks in our community. We are working tirelessly to contain the threat of a cholera outbreak in our community.

“We use various channels to talk to our population, such as through landlord associations and others, and to make them aware of the need to pay attention to hygiene when preparing food and drinks.

“We urge residents to familiarise themselves with precautionary measures against the outbreak of the deadly cholera disease.”
