Settlement reached after accident that left bride dead and groom injured hours after wedding – WSB-TV Channel 2

The family of a South Carolina bride who was killed by a drunk driver on her wedding night has been awarded $1.3 million in compensation, according to WAFB.

In a case that attracted national attention, Samantha Miller was driving a golf cart away from her oceanfront wedding on April 28, 2023, when she, her new husband Aric Hutchinson and two members of Hutchinson’s family were struck by a car traveling 65 miles per hour – 40 miles over the speed limit, police said.

The driver, Jamie Lee Komoroski, was charged with vehicular manslaughter and three counts of driving under the influence.

Lisa Miller had challenged the validity of her daughter’s marriage to Hutchinson just hours earlier and asked a probate judge to remove Hutchinson as personal representative of his wife’s estate, citing “potential fraud” and “conflicts of interest,” The Post and Courier reported.

Hutchinson filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of his late wife’s estate in the Charleston County Court of Common Pleas.

A judge awarded Miller’s family, Hutchinson and the two other people injured in the accident $1.3 million in compensation on Tuesday. According to WDBJ, they will receive a total of $863,000 after legal fees.

The compensation came from Enterprise Rental Cars, where Komoroski rented a car the night of the incident, and several bars in Folly Beach, South Carolina, that had served Komoroski before the accident, according to WCSC.

Hutchinson’s attorney made a statement in the courtroom alluding to the ongoing dispute between his client and Miller’s family over control of her estate, WCSC reported.

“The reason we are here today is because of a tragic incident,” said attorney Danny Dalton. “The deceased, Ms. Samantha Miller, was killed in a car accident. Her husband, Mr. Aric Hutchinson, is here with us. He is the personal representative of the estate.”

Hutchinson had to undergo numerous operations after breaking both legs and several bones in his face in the accident.
