Dalit woman raped and forced to convert

A man was arrested by police in Gonda district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh for raping a 25-year-old Dalit woman on the pretext of marriage and forcing her to convert to Islam, an official said on Wednesday.

Gonda: A man was arrested by police in Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly raping a 25-year-old Dalit woman under the pretext of marriage and force them to convert to Islam, an official said on Wednesday.

“In her complaint, the woman accuses one Taj Mohammed of raping her on the pretext of marriage and forcibly converting her to Islam,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (ASP) Manoj Kumar Rawat said, according to PTI.

After the alleged rape last year, the accused, Taj Mohammed, continued to threaten the woman, threatening her with violence if she told anyone about the incident, the official said.

“A few days ago he also hurled Caste system insults them,” the officer added.

Based on the woman’s complaint on Tuesday, the police filed a complaint against Taj Mohammed for rape (IPC section 376) and under relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Conversion Act, PTI reported.

Further investigations in this case are currently ongoing.

“We have arrested the accused and launched an investigation into the matter,” the official said.
