Ex-boyfriend arrested after shooting in Bouquet Canyon

Los Angeles County prosecutors have filed 13 charges against a man who allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home on Bouquet Canyon Road and fired a gun near children, according to a criminal complaint filed last month in San Fernando Superior Court.

Daniel Francisco Ponce, 29, was arrested after an incident that Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials initially described as burglary and domestic violence at a home in the 28800 block of Bouquet Canyon Road.

A woman called the station at 2:45 a.m. on May 26 to report that her ex-boyfriend had broken into her home armed. Several residents also reported hearing gunshots in the area around the intersection of David Way and Vasquez Canyon Road.

Officers at the SCV station responded to the call, found a man matching the suspect’s description and arrested him, according to a May 28 email from Deputy Kabrina Borbon of the SCV Sheriff’s Station.

The criminal complaint also alleges that Ponce, who is 5’4″ tall and weighs 165 pounds, became belligerent with officers and kicked out the window of a patrol car, causing more than $400 in damage.

In a 14th misdemeanor charge, Ponce was accused of hindering police during an arrest.

The complaint does not provide details about what happened at the home that Sunday morning, but the criminal complaint alleges that several children present were frightened and terrified.

In addition to first-degree burglary, Ponce is also charged with four counts of child abuse under circumstances likely to cause serious injury or death. Four victims are named in the indictment. Each of the five counts carries a possible prison sentence of six years.

In addition, there are four charges related to the intentional and grossly negligent firing of a firearm.

A station officer confirmed at the scene that .45 caliber cartridge cases were found.

Ponce also faces a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, as well as two charges related to his two prior convictions in Riverside County: a charge of reckless flight from arrest in 2020 and a charge of resisting arrest in 2014.

He pleaded not guilty earlier this month in Section S in San Fernando, according to a court clerk. He is due back in court on July 15 to set a date for his preliminary hearing.

At the preliminary hearing, the charges and evidence are presented and a judge decides whether a trial is warranted.

Ponce remains in custody pending trial on $560,000 bail. He is being held at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic, according to LASD arrest records available online.
