A three-year-old child suffered only minor injuries after the toddler’s father attempted suicide by jumping from the Main Street Bridge onto the toll road below.

It happened on Wednesday, May 8, around 12:45 p.m.

According to Mishawaka police, two witnesses found a vehicle parked upside down on the overpass.

One of the witnesses then saw a 45-year-old South Bend man holding the toddler. He then jumped off the bridge and landed with his son in the inside left lane of the toll road.

The citizen had stopped and attempted to stop the man, but lost his footing due to the loose clothing the man was wearing.

The citizen then went onto the highway and attempted to pull both the man and the child off the road. The police came to help. Both the man and child were taken to Memorial Hospital.

The father died from the injuries he sustained from the jump. The good news is that the three-year-old was not seriously injured and is expected to be released from the hospital in about a day.
