Police officer rescues driver from burning semi-trailer in Little Cottonwood

UPDATE: KSL TV has acquired body camera footage showing the officer pulling the driver from the scene with help from witnesses at the accident scene.

SALT LAKE CITY – On Monday morning, the road off State Route 210 in Little Cottonwood Canyon was closed for hours due to a serious rollover accident.

Witnesses did not believe anyone could have survived the explosion, but a Unified State Police officer ran into the flames and attempted a daring rescue.

A supervisor at the Unified Police Department identified Officer Wilson of the Canyon Patrol Unit as the hero who rushed to rescue a driver trapped in the burning semi-trailer. At the supervisor’s request, KSL will use only the officer’s last name.

“The officer was super humble and didn’t expect anything from the whole thing. He just walked in not knowing the situation. He didn’t know if the man was alive or dead. The officer put himself in danger. That’s the kind of bravery you expect from a police officer. He’s unbelievable! He’s a hero,” said Justin Morgan, a witness who called 911.

Wilson arrived at the scene alone and without fire protection equipment.
