The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Lebowakgomo is intensifying its investigation to arrest a male suspect who threw acid in the face of his 44-year-old girlfriend.

He then raped her and beat her with a panga, injuring her arm, after a heated argument.

The incident occurred on Friday, 7 June 2024, at around 9:30 p.m. in Thokgoaneng village in Ga-Chuene in Lebowakgomo Police Station.

According to the information, the victim was visiting her boyfriend at home when the incident occurred. After the ordeal, the suspect fled the scene. The police were notified and opened a case for rape and grievous bodily harm.

A manhunt was immediately launched to track down the suspect.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has ordered the Lebowakgomo FCS investigation team to work tirelessly until the suspect is arrested.

Hadebe expressed her outrage over the incident given the ongoing gender-based violence in the province.

She urged community members to help with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect.

“Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect should contact investigating officer Detective Sergeant Sarah Mokoena on 082 469 1173 or Crime Stop number 0860010111 or the nearest police station or MySAPSApp,” she said.

The police investigation is ongoing.
