The children were flown to a hospital in San Antonio for treatment of their injuries.
SAN ANTONIO – State police are investigating a head-on collision that left seven people dead and two children hospitalized in San Antonio.
The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon a few miles north of Carrizo Springs in Dimmit County. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), a Chrysler 300 with four passengers was driving too fast before it spun out of control, went in the wrong direction and struck a Dodge pickup truck.
The Chrysler rolled into a ditch and caught fire. All four passengers died, traffic police officials say. Their injuries were so severe that authorities were unable to identify them.
Three of the five Crystal City residents who were in the truck, according to DPS – 50-year-old Isabel Small, 64-year-old San Juanita De La Cruz and 83-year-old Victor Manuel Martinez – died in the crash, which demolished both vehicles.
The only survivors are two unidentified children who authorities said were flown to University Hospital in San Antonio, more than 100 miles away, for treatment. Their ages and the severity of their injuries are unknown.
DPS is leading the investigation.
