Antwerp hospital suspends radiologist because “diagnoses were not always complete or accurate enough”

The audit came about after several doctors inside and outside the hospital questioned the quality of medical imaging examinations at ZNA Cadix. A medical imaging examination is an examination of (a part of) the body. Examples include X-rays, CT scans or MRI scans.

Concerned doctors contacted the hospital’s chief physician and a medical audit followed. The initial results of the audit show that the “quality of medical imaging did not always meet strict quality standards. Diagnoses were not always complete or accurate enough.”

The hospital has decided to suspend all radiologists until the audit is completed. Radiologists from other hospitals will now step in to compensate for their absence. ZNA Cadix hospital says the errors and omissions were not due to the equipment that was available to the radiologists. “Their quality is beyond doubt, it is the latest equipment available on the market.”

Flemish nationalist politician Els van Doesburg, chairwoman of the ZNA hospital group, emphasises: “The hospital offers the highest quality of care. If the quality is compromised, we intervene. That is why we are acting now.”
