A wrecked white school bus lay on its side in the river while dozens of people swam alongside the vehicle, as seen in footage from the local civil defense organization, also known as the White Helmets.

The video also shows rescue workers climbing over rocks on the cliff to search for survivors while medical personnel tended to the victims.

The bus was on a school trip when the vehicle went off the road in the Ayoun Ara area west of the city of Idlib and fell into the Orontes River, the White Helmets said in a statement. It was not immediately clear why the bus went off the road.
