Honored for police officer shot in incident on I-88 in Duanesburg in 2023 | News

Police Officer Richard W. Albert was named 2024 Police Officer of the Year by the American Association of State Troopers. The reason for this was Albert’s “bravery and courage” and his “courageous actions” with which he “prevented any further threat to the public without regard for his own safety,” according to a press release.

Albert was a 21-year veteran of the Cobleskill-based police department when he encountered and stopped a driver traveling 110 mph on Interstate 88 on June 16, 2023.

Albert stopped the car, but as he approached the vehicle, the driver rolled down the window and opened fire, hitting the police officer in the shoulder area of his left upper arm, police said at the time.

Police released a still image from Albert’s body camera showing the 9mm gun pointed at him from the window.

“Without hesitation, he reacted tactically and instinctively, just as he was trained to do, taking cover while returning fire,” the release said. “From a cover position at the rear of his patrol car, he called the State Police Communications Division for assistance and calmly and clearly made numerous radio calls to keep responding officers informed.”

“Although wounded and still under fire, he remained engaged with the suspect and continued to return fire,” the press release continued.

The suspect, who was the passenger, and the driver of the truck attempted to flee, but a passing semi-truck driver who witnessed the shooting was credited with his heroic act when he steered his semi-truck directly into the path of the fleeing car.

The suspect and the driver then attempted to steal a broken-down pickup truck.

“Using the grassy median terrain as cover, Trooper Albert continued his pursuit of the suspects,” the citation states, “all the while firing shots and exchanging magazines. He remained in the fight until the shooter had no choice but to flee into the edge of the woods.”

Due to the location of the incident, the first reinforcements only arrived after 12 minutes.

The arriving officers arrested the driver and took care of Albert.

Albert was treated and later released, officials said.
