Man injured in unprovoked knife attack in downtown Mountain View

A 31-year-old man suffered a minor injury to his hand Sunday evening after he was attacked by a stranger armed with a knife in downtown Mountain View, Mountain View police said.

The suspect, a 67-year-old homeless man, approached and attacked the victim in the alley and rear parking lot on the 400 block of Castro Street around 9:45 p.m. on June 2, Mountain View police said.

The two men did not know each other and no reason was given for the attack. The suspect was armed with a knife when arrested and was later identified by the victim and several witnesses, police said.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail, police said.

The suspect is being held on $25,000 bail, and a hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, June 5, according to county records.
