Severe weather moves across northern Georgia toward metro Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Storms are moving closer to the Atlanta metro area, bringing the potential for severe weather.

A line of storms will continue until mid-morning. Within this line of storms, damaging straight-line winds will be the primary threat, but hail and a brief tornado will be possible.

6:15 a.m.: Habersham and Rabun counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning.

“People who are outside should seek shelter immediately. If you hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning,” the National Weather Service said.

6:11 a.m. Atlanta News Senior Reporter Asia Wilson tracks heavy rain on the roads. Storms are moving into the Atlanta metro area.

5:44 a.m. Severe weather impacts reported in Whitfield County. An estimated 1,300 people are without power as emergency crews respond to a transformer fire and downed power lines along Cavender Road. Heavy flooding was reported on the roadway along North Glenwood Avene and East Tyler Street.

5:42 a.m. Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Chattooga and Floyd counties.

5:34 a.m. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Gilmer, Murray and Gordon counties.

4:10 a.m. Meteorologist Rodney Harris tracks storms moving through northwest Georgia.

4:07 a.m. Severe storms are bearing down on far northwest Georgia, bringing 60 mph winds and hail.

3:18 a.m. A tornado watch has been issued for northwest Georgia. The storms are then expected to move into Dade and Walker counties.
