New Delhi: A 30-year-old man allegedly raped at least seven tribal girls in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh by posing as a college professor using a voice-changing app. The accused chose his victims under the pretext of offering them scholarships. The crime took place between January and May this year.

So far, the police have arrested four accused in this case. An SIT has also been set up. The main accused Brajesh Prajapati, Rahul Prajapati, Sandeep Prajapati and Lavkush Prajapati have been arrested. The investigation is ongoing. The accomplices reportedly shared the phone number of the first victim, thus facilitating the crimes. Prajapati used a voice-changing application, easily available in app stores, to disguise his voice and gain the trust of his victims.

The method

The victims, all from financially disadvantaged tribal families, were lured with the promise of scholarships. The accused first downloaded an app called Magic, which allows users to change their voice to sound like that of a girl. Using the app, the accused collected names and details of female teachers at the college. He imitated the voice of a teacher named Ranjana to make calls to students.

He posed as Ranjana and contacted students under the pretext of scholarship or other academic matters and asked them to come to a particular place. When the students reached there, he took them to a deserted area and committed the crime there.

POCSO deployed against accused

Since the victim was a minor, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was invoked. Prajapati, who worked as a labourer, learnt how to use the voice-changing app through YouTube tutorials. His accomplices Rahul Prajapati and Sandeep Prajapati helped in obtaining the contact details of the victims.

Congress criticises Prime Minister Yadav

Meanwhile, the Congress party criticised Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and the law and order situation. The Congress claims that the government is busy with elections and tribal girls are not safe. Politicians like Kamal Nath and Jeetu Patwari tweeted about the incident and demanded strict action against the accused.
