Car crashes into power pole, leaving 2,000 people without electricity in university district: officials

CHARLOTTE, NC (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Nearly 2,000 customers are without power in the University District Friday afternoon after a car crashed into a pole.

According to Duke Energy officials, the outage occurred on May 24 at approximately 3:40 p.m. Restoration is expected by 6:45 p.m. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, lanes leading off of North Tryon Street are closed at Institute Circle Drive and nearby traffic lights are out of service.


According to paramedics, one person was taken to hospital following a car accident in the area. The person sustained serious injuries.

As of 4:20 p.m., traffic was backed up in both directions on North Tryon between JW Clay Boulevard and the Mallard Creek Greenway Bridge.
