Two people have died and five are missing after a boat collision on the Danube, Hungarian police said.

Officers found a man with a bleeding head on the shore near Veroce, about 30 miles (48 km) north of Budapest, on Saturday evening.

Police believe he is a survivor of the incident after the bodies of a man and a woman were found nearby.

A hotel boat with a damaged hull was stopped more than 50 miles (80 km) to the west at Komarom.

The Hungarian news site Blikk reported that it was 109 meters long and had collided with a motorboat. It was said that the hotel ship probably traveled from Budapest.

The wreckage of the smaller boat was found by rescue workers early Sunday morning and towed to shore.

Around 90 people are said to be involved in the search for the missing people – three men and two women – using boats, drones and thermal imaging cameras.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against an unnamed person on suspicion of killing and endangering water transport.

The stretch of river near Veroce where the survivor was found is about 1,500 feet (460 m) wide and is a popular recreational area.

It is also on the route that many cruise ships use between Budapest and the Austrian capital Vienna.
