A young basset hound, two cats, three geckos and two birds were found dead in their home, officials said.

Boucher told investigators that caring for the animals had become “too much.” She told them she lived in the house but claimed she didn’t know how serious her animals’ condition was.

Investigators said Boucher told them she fed the animals three to five times a week, but in the past she had fed them five days at a time without food.

“Due to their condition, it appeared unlikely that the animals were being fed even three or five times per week,” the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators said Boucher’s bedroom was the only area of the house that was clean.

They also said that she fed herself daily and treated herself to a $6 to $8 coffee almost every day.

“Unopened cans of dog food were found on a coffee table and Boucher admitted that she had received an automatic delivery of dog food from Amazon and had the financial means to feed the animals,” the sheriff’s office said. “Investigators concluded that Boucher was clearly capable of providing basic food and care and turning them over to animal control or a local animal rescue before they suffered such neglect.”

Investigators said they rescued some of the animals and those animals are now being cared for by Volusia County Animal Services.
