  • Woolworths refuses to apologize as Prime Minister derails investigation

    Woolworths chief commercial officer Paul Harker said the supermarket had “done nothing wrong” when asked by Queensland Premier Steven Miles to apologize to the public over food prices.

    Miles was an unexpected participant in the parliamentary inquiry into supermarket prices, cheering on representatives from Coles and Woolworths.

    “I’m trying to understand what I’m actually apologizing for,” Harker replied.

  • “Unauthorized arrivals at sea” found in WA

    Four Vietnamese have been found near the coastal town of Broome in Western Australia after entering illegally by boat, prompting further scrutiny of the country’s border guard.

    The “unauthorized sea arrivals” reached Australia’s shores on Friday morning, Guardian Australia reported.

    This comes after 33 illegal immigrants were found on Christmas Island after their boat was wrecked in bad weather. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stressed that there are sufficient resources for the Australian Border Force to ensure that no one arriving in this way settles in the country.

  • Man allegedly impales dingo on K’gari

    A dingo was killed after a man allegedly speared it on K’gari.

    The man said the dingo was at his campsite on April 19 before the alleged attack with a harpoon. Authorities are now investigating the man for breaches of the 1992 Nature Conservation Act, which prohibits the deliberate harm of dingoes.

    The man presented himself to police the day after the alleged attack and cooperated with officers.

  • Notable lack of sun for millions on the East Coast

    So far it has been a miserable May for millions along the New South Wales coast, with a string of terrible rainy days.

    Sydney residents endured 13 days of continuous rain, resulting in almost double the average rainfall for the month.

    But another notable statistic is the lack of sun they had. According to Weatherzone, the city had “exceptionally low average sunshine hours” in May, at just 2.5 hours per day. The long-term average in May is 5.9 hours, more than twice as high.

  • Airplane with failed landing gear lands safely

    There is great relief at Newcastle Airport after a plane with technical problems landed safely.

    Cheers could be heard from the crews on the ground as the plane came to a stop after a so-called “belly landing.”

  • Circling plane “practices” emergency landing

    A small plane prepares to make an emergency landing after circling Newcastle Airport for more than two hours.

    The aircraft has mechanical problems with the landing gear. ABC reporter Giselle Wakatama said the plane was flying low in what appeared to be practice runs for landing, with a “belly landing” expected without landing gear.

    Previous reports suggested there were five people on board the plane, but ABC believes there were three people.

    Wet conditions are reportedly making the operation, which is expected to take place in the next half hour, difficult.

    An emergency incident occurs at Newcastle Airport, with an aircraft circling overhead with a reported landing gear failure.

    Witnesses reported seeing multiple emergency vehicles racing to the airport, ABC reported.

    Another day and more rain for Sydney. Monday’s early showers mean 14 consecutive days of rain for millions of people.

    The city’s record duration of rain is 16 days from 2022 and 1943. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, there is a small chance of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.

    The South Australian government is moving forward with plans to ban social media for children under 14.

    Prime Minister Peter Malinauskas said social media had contributed to a “dramatic increase” in depression and anxiety among children, citing several studies on the topic.

    “I think we’re now at the point where governments need to act,” he told ABC News Breakfast on Monday.
