A hiker has been found dead after going missing in the Lake District.

The Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team said they received a call on Thursday morning about a man who was overdue from a hike from Seathwaite to Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain.

The team searched throughout Thursday but found no sign of the man. Further searches on Friday led to the discovery of a body.

The team said its “sincere condolences go out to the hiker’s family and friends.”

Around 30 volunteers from several groups took part in the almost 40-hour search, including the Keswick, Langdale Ambleside and Duddon and Furness mountain rescue teams.

Search dogs, drones and a coastguard helicopter were also involved, said a spokesman for the Wasdale team.

“Tragically a discovery was made (on Friday morning),” the spokesman said, adding: “Unfortunately he did not survive.”
