Bamber’s accident causes a red flag in Spa, Pier Guidi leads.

02 Earl Bamber of New Zealand and Alex Lynn of Great Britain, representing Cadillac Racing, were seen in action during the 2024 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps TotalEnergies, the third round of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship. The event took place from May 8th to 11th, 2024 at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Stavelot, Belgium. The photo taken by DPPI’s Javier Jimenez shows the intense atmosphere of the race.

During the race, Earl Bamber was involved in a serious accident with the #2 Cadillac V-Series.R on the Kemmel Straight. This incident resulted in the red flag being raised with 1 hour and 45 minutes left on the clock. Despite the interruption, the race continued and was scheduled to end at 7 p.m. local time.

Bamber chased Neel Jani from Proton Competition and was aiming for third place. He caught up with the #99 Porsche 963 driven by Jani after successfully overtaking Sean Galael in the #31 BMW WRT M4 GT3. Bamber also tried to overtake Galael but unfortunately collided with the BMW. This collision caused both cars to crash into the guardrails at high speed, causing significant damage to the Cadillac. The BMW was also significantly damaged and came to a stop against the guard rails on the left side of the track.

Due to the severity of the accident, debris from both vehicles was scattered across the track. The race officials then raised the red flag to ensure the safety of the drivers. Marshals and the safety team were dispatched to help the drivers remove the damaged cars and clear the track of all debris.

At the time of the red flag, Ferrari’s Alessandro Pier Guidi was leading the race, having previously overtaken Jani. When the race resumed after an hour under a virtual and full safety car, Jani took back the lead, closely followed by Ferrari’s James Calado in the #51 Ferrari 499P. Jani managed to maintain a small distance between him and Calado.

However, Calado took the opportunity to overtake Jani after navigating traffic in Eau Rouge and Raidillon. On the Kemmel straight in Les Combes, he quickly overtook Jani and secured the lead for his team. Calado and later Pier Guidi, who replaced Calado, then extended their lead to over 23 seconds. Initially she was ahead of Jani, but now she is ahead of the second placed car, Ferrari #50.

The overtaking maneuvers caused Jani to drop to third place and Antonio Fuoco from the Ferrari sister team took over the position. Fuoco’s approach mirrored that of his teammate Calado at the start of the race. Yifei Ye in the #83 AF Corse Ferrari takes fourth place, while Nyck de Vries in the #7 Toyota GR010 Hybrid takes fifth place.

Unfortunately, Porsche #5, which started the race from pole position with Fred Makowiecki, had to retire after Michael Christensen, Makowiecki’s partner, collided with the guardrail at Blanchimont. This collision caused irreparable damage to the car and resulted in a yellow flag across the entire track.

In addition, the #63 Lamborghini SC63, driven by WEC debutant Andrea Caldarelli, had to retire from the race due to damage to the right rear suspension.

In the LMGT3 category, Morris Schuring leads the race in the Manthey EMA Porsche 911 GT3R #91. Rahel Frey, driving the Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2 #85 Iron Dames, is currently in second place, about 8 seconds behind Schuring. Joel Sturm, representing the Porsche #92 Mathey Purerxcing, is in third place, about 12 seconds behind Frey.
