Fontana police release video footage of an incident in which an officer was assaulted and a suspect was shot | News

Fontana police have released body-worn camera video of an incident in which an officer was attacked by a suspect and then shot and injured by another officer.

The footage can be seen on the Fontana Police Department’s Facebook page along with commentary from Police Chief Michael Dorsey.

The incident occurred at 11:45 a.m. on February 9 in Yucaipa, where Fontana PD gang investigators were assisting the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the Yucaipa Police Department in an enforcement investigation.

Two officers initiated a traffic stop on a car for vehicle code violations at Yucaipa Boulevard and 14th Street. The car was driven by 56-year-old Alan Metka.

The lead officer called Metka and asked him to get out of the vehicle. Metka was met on the sidewalk by a policewoman who began searching for weapons while the lead officer returned to the police patrol.

During the search, it was discovered that Metka was carrying a concealed firearm in his right front pocket. In the video, the officer can be heard screaming, “He has a gun!” Metka put the officer in a headlock as they fought for possession of the weapon.

The lead officer got out of the car, ran toward the suspect and yelled, “Let her go! Let her go!” The chief officer fired his weapon once, hitting Metka in the jaw.

Metka was taken to a local hospital, where he survived his injuries and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, Dorsey said.

Dorsey said Metka is a convicted felon who has previously been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, auto theft, robbery and possession of an explosive device.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and Fontana Police Department are investigating the incident.
