Investigations into shooting and house fire continue

COEUR d’ALENE – Police are investigating the circumstances that led to a man’s death in a burning house on Sunday.

The burned-out house was still cordoned off on Monday morning and investigators were on site.

“We do not believe there is any continued threat to the public,” Sergeant Jared Reneau said Monday.

Police responded to reports of a gunshot wound at a residence on Ninth Street in Coeur d’Alene around 2 p.m. Sunday.

When the police arrived, a man was standing in front of the house with a gun slung over his back. The man allegedly disobeyed police instructions and entered the house.

Shortly thereafter, police said, “it became clear that the house had been set on fire,” and officers reported hearing gunshots from inside. By the time firefighters arrived, the house was already fully engulfed in flames.

The Coeur d’Alene fire department extinguished the fire. The surrounding houses were not affected.

Detectives found a dead person in the house. According to Coeur d’Alene police, investigators were working Monday to confirm the person’s identity. The cause of death has not yet been publicly released.

Apparently only one person was involved in the incident, police said on Monday.
