Houston mother allegedly put newborn baby in dumpster with umbilical cord still attached after giving birth behind her workplace

HOUSTON – A young mother is now facing serious charges after allegedly giving birth to a baby and immediately throwing her offspring into a dumpster last week.

Court documents show that Everilda Cux-Ajtzalam, 18, was arrested July 23 and charged with a third-degree felony count of abandoning a child without intent to return.

Here is what happened

Police say Cux-Ajtzalam gave birth to a baby on the ground behind a food truck where she worked in the 6020 block of Dashwood Drive.

After giving birth, court records say the teen tied the baby, placenta and umbilical cord in a trash bag before placing it in a nearby dumpster, leaving the baby behind.

Documents show a passerby heard the baby screaming for help and called 911 to retrieve the child. The baby was taken to the hospital where his condition remains unknown.

When police arrested Cux-Ajtzalam, she reportedly told them she had no choice but to throw away her baby because she did not want her boyfriend to break up with her.

Additionally, investigators said the entire incident was captured on surveillance video.

Cux-Ajtzalam is believed to be a flight risk, having no ties to the country. She is currently in jail on $90,000 bail.

His next court appearance is set for July 29.
