Driver arrested after fleeing traffic control and accident

The accident occurred near the Grant Street exit on I-17 in Phoenix. The highway is currently closed.

PHOENIX — According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the southbound lanes of Interstate 17 at Jefferson Street in Phoenix are closed after a crash near the Grant Street exit that resulted in the driver’s arrest.

DPS told 12News that troopers attempted to stop a driver at mile marker 200, just south of the I-17/I-10 interchange, north of Van Buren Street.

The driver refused to stop and tried to flee from the police, but had an accident.

The accident caused minor injuries and the driver was arrested.

DPS has not yet said why officers attempted to stop the driver.

Southbound I-17 is closed at Jefferson Street while police investigate the crash. DPS does not yet know when the highway will reopen.

The arrested driver was not identified.
