Two TASUED students robbed and raped in an off-campus dormitory

Two students of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ogun State were robbed and raped.

Omolola Odutola, the Ogun Police spokesman, told TheCable that the incident occurred at about 10pm on Monday.

She said the incident was reported to the Igbeba Division of the Ogun State Police and the victims were admitted to hospital.

Odutola said the robbers entered an off-campus apartment where the victims (names withheld) lived by tearing down a window covered with a net.

“The victims were robbed of their phones and an undisclosed amount of money at gunpoint through a POS transaction,” she said.

“The robbers then took the girls to an unfinished building opposite their house, where they took turns raping them.

“As soon as the ladies leave the hospital, they will be questioned and further investigations will be launched to catch the perpetrators.”

Earlier this month, a group of cult members disrupted an exam at TASUED in order to lynch a student in the final year of study.

Odutola said the police in the state had also recently dealt with some cases of harassment originating from TASUED’s host community.

She said the command is trying to work with the Vice Chancellor of TASUED to address the recurring security threats at the school.

“Most of TASUED’s students live outside the school because the university does not have a dormitory. And some of the locals in the host community are hostile. This is not the first time something like this has happened at the school,” she said.

“We had previously arrested a number of suspects involved in similar acts.

“We will work with the VC to address the security threats facing the university.”

Developments in recent weeks have raised increasing concerns about security on Nigerian university campuses and in surrounding communities.

In May, two students from the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) were kidnapped and later killed.

In June, a graduate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) who was working on her documents, murdered after she was raped.

The Acting Rector of Benue State Polytechnic, Emmanuel Barki, was recently kidnapped and asked to pay 70 million naira ransom.
