54-year-old woman dies in possible drowning accident off Ali’i Drive | Local

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (Island News) – A 54-year-old woman is dead after she was pulled from the water near Ali’i Drive Sunday evening, July 21, 2024.

At approximately 5:54 p.m., Kona Patrol Officers along with the Hawaii Fire Department responded to a possible drowning incident in the 75-5600 block of Ali’i Drive in Kailua-Kona.

Officials reported that a 54-year-old woman who had recently moved to Hawaii from New Mexico was found floating face down in the water near shore.

Bystanders pulled the woman out of the water and immediately performed CPR until paramedics arrived on the scene. She was then taken to Kona Community Hospital and later flown to Honolulu by helicopter in critical condition.

On Monday, July 22, at 9:29 a.m., the woman was pronounced dead at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

The identity of the woman has not yet been established and there is no clear identification or notification of friends and family.

Hawaii Island Police have initiated a post-mortem investigation to determine the exact cause of death and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Officer Kaimi Andres-Kamakau by phone at 808-935-3311 or by email at [email protected].
