Andre Seldon Jr., cornerback of Utah State University, apparently dead after drowning.

Andre Seldon Jr., a cornerback for Utah State, was found dead Saturday night in Porcupine Reservoir, about 40 minutes from campus. He drowned, apparently after a cliff-diving accident, the university said.

He was 22.

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office said officers were dispatched to the scene around 2:20 p.m. local time on Saturday after receiving calls about a possible drowning accident in which a young man was observed jumping off the cliffs and not resurfacing.

Seldon’s body was recovered by a Utah Department of Public Safety dive team around 9:05 p.m., and the sheriff’s office said initial investigations indicate Seldon’s death was a “tragic accident.”

“Our football program is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our members,” Utah State
Interim coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling said in a press release: “After already
relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you, he was
an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andres family
We mourn with them over this enormous loss.”

Seldon began his fifth year of college football and his first at Utah State after transferring from New Mexico State, where he spent the previous two seasons and was captain of his team.

Seldon, a promising graduate of Belleville High School in Michigan, began his college career at the University of Michigan, where he appeared in one game each of his first two years before transferring to New Mexico State, where Dreiling served as defensive coordinator his final two seasons.

“Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated by the sudden passing of Andre Seldon
Jr.,” Utah State vice president and athletic director Diana Sabau said in a press release. “We extend our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates and all who loved him.
