3 teenagers die and 1 Greensboro police officer injured after collision on Walker Avenue

According to Greensboro police, three teenagers have died after a suspected wrong-way driver collided with a patrol car. Police say around 2:15 a.m., a GPD officer noticed a car traveling the wrong way down West Market Street at East Lake Drive. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but instead of stopping, the car sped away at a high rate of speed. Police pursued the car before it collided with a responding officer’s car. Police say all occupants of the vehicles were extricated from the cars and given life-saving measures. Several Walker Avenue residents were awakened by the loud noise of the crash. He said he heard the sound of a car going very fast and then the crash. “I knew right away that something really bad had happened. First of all, I knew how fast they were going. Second of all, I knew how loud the noise was,” he said. “But I could also see the smoke and I could also see all the commotion around the two cars.”Kennedy rushed outside to see if he could help. It was instantaneous,” Skaggs said. “‘What the heck was that? Why are there so many sirens?’ They (police) were right behind the chase, thankfully.”Skaggs says he got a clearer idea of ​​what happened when he looked out the window. “I looked out the window and saw a car on fire and a bunch of paramedics or EMTs,” Skaggs said. From Kennedy’s vantage point, he could also see first responders trying to perform life-saving measures through the thick smoke. “The smoke was unbelievable,” he said. “It was hard to even breathe, that’s how much smoke there was.”Kennedy says first responders performed CPR for 15 minutes or more after recovering the car’s occupants. He was also there when the vehicles were towed hours later.”Six hours later, when the tow trucks came by, I saw the car up close and it literally looked like someone had chopped it in half,” Kennedy said.Deputy Chief Tabler says officers spent all of Tuesday identifying the teens and notifying families. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but instead of stopping, the car sped away at a high rate of speed. Police pursued the car before it collided with the car of an officer who was responding.

According to police, all occupants were freed from the cars and life-saving measures were taken.

Several residents of Walker Avenue were awakened by the loud noise of the crash.

Another Walker Avenue resident, Liam Skaggs, said he was confused and worried when he was awakened by the accident, which occurred right in front of his family’s home.

“It was right in front of the house. It happened immediately,” Skaggs said. “‘What the hell was that? Why are there so many sirens?’ They (the police) were fortunately right behind the chase.”

Skaggs says he got a clearer idea of ​​what was happening when he looked out the window.

“I looked out the window and saw a car on fire and a group of paramedics or emergency medical technicians,” Skaggs said.

From Kennedy’s perspective, he could also see first responders attempting life-saving measures through the thick smoke.

“The smoke was unbelievable,” he said. “It was even hard to breathe, it was so smoky.”

Kennedy says that after rescuers rescued the car’s occupants, they performed CPR for at least 15 minutes.

He was also there when the vehicles were towed away hours later.

“Six hours later, when the tow trucks came by, I saw the car up close and it literally looked like someone had chopped it in half,” Kennedy said.

According to Deputy Chief Tabler, officers spent the entire day Tuesday identifying the teenagers and informing their families.

GPD and North Carolina State Highway Patrol are investigating the accident.
