Street fight leaves one dead in traffic accident in Edinburgh

TThe Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a homicide investigation after a woman was found dead in Edinburg on Sunday following an altercation with a driver who struck her and another man.

Accordingly a press release from the sheriffOfficers responded to several 911 calls reporting a disturbance in the 6300 block of Lorena Street at approximately 4:52 p.m. Sunday.

“Callers reported several people fighting in the street. One man was reportedly armed with a machete,” the press release said.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a 20-year-old woman with fatal head injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. Her identity has not yet been released.

Initial witness statements indicate that a man and a woman were walking down the street when a vehicle stopped and a verbal argument broke out between the driver and the victims. Although the driver initially drove away, he returned and struck both people with his vehicle, according to the sheriff.

The 27-year-old male victim suffered only minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. He was also not identified.

The sheriff’s office said officers located and arrested the driver of the vehicle. Sheriff’s investigators and crime scene specialists are currently on scene to speak with witnesses and collect evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
